Importance of Trading in Good Quality Building Materials

All the materials that are used during the construction of a building can be called Building Materials. They are classified into two broad categories – natural and man-made materials. Mud, clay, stone, sand, wood, etc. constitute the natural materials and cement, glass, fired bricks, metals, foam, ceramics, and plastic are the man-made materials. The quality of these materials, which are used in the construction of various buildings, is of extreme importance. It plays an important role in the durability of the building and the safety of people residing in and around it.

People across the globe have witnessed several cases of collapsing buildings and the use of poor quality building materials is one of the reasons for such occurrences. Be it the Sampoong Department Store collapse in South Korea in 1995 that killed about 507 people, or the 2013 Savar Building collapse in Bangladesh, or 2013 Thane Building collapse in India, the reason was a structural failure and use of poor-quality building material in construction.

These incidents have claimed many lives and have highlighted the importance of responsible construction which includes use or trade of good quality building materials. Suppliers or manufacturers of such building material should ensure that they trade in good quality building materials. For example,
  • Bricks that are made of soil should be free from stone or chemicals, well burnt in kilns, and free from cracks, and with sharp and square edges. It should have gone through tests like Soundness Test, Hardness Test, Absorption Test, Shape and Size Test and Crushing Strength Test etc.
  • Precisely measuring the amount of cement, aggregate, sand, and water is important for a good quality concrete. It is also essential to keep it properly curated in the early stages of setting. Water used for this needs to be free of acids, chemicals or any such component that might harm the quality of the concrete.
With extensive efforts being put to increase awareness about environmental issues, it is necessary to act and try and use green building materials which are materials which have non-toxic ingredients and recycled content, materials that are reusable and durable and those which are manufactured with resource-efficient processes and also which are energy efficient and water conserving.
